Burlington artist Jennifer McCandless creates ceramic sculptures using humor and satirical narratives to challenge the viewer’s perspectives on constructions of identity and societal norms. The pieces offer a social critique of how we interpret the ills of the world, how we interact with one another, and how we see ourselves. McCandless’ fascination with human behavior is cultivated in the study of figure and grounded in satirical narrative. She relies on the expressive qualities of clay to capture dark social and personal realities and to offer playful, ironic, or damning commentaries.
McCandless will share her own personal and creative journeys and narratives, mapping her expressive existence over time and space. She’ll share inspiration and creation stories about her pieces in New England Now: Strange States and give insight into the next evolutions of her artistry.
The conversation is anticipated to last approximately 45 minutes, with questions encouraged throughout.
Free to Museum Members or with Museum Admission.
McCandless’s work is part of New England Now: Strange States, on view through the close of the Museum season, October 20.
