NATIVE AMERICAN INITIATIVE AT SHELBURNE MUSEUM

ADVISORY COMMITTEES

Native American Advisory Committee, made up of regional and national Indigenous culture bearers, academics, museum professionals, and enrolled citizens of Tribes represented in the collection who advise on the new collection’s care and presentation. This committee has been guiding the effort for over two years. Committee members include:

  • Don Stevens, Chief, Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk – Abenaki Nation; 
  • Elizabeth Hutchinson, PhD, Tow Associate Professor of American Art History, Barnard College; 
  • Melissane Schrems, PhD, Associate Professor History; Coordinator, Native American Studies, St. Lawrence University;
  • Philip Deloria, PhD, Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History, Harvard University; Trustee, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian; and of Dakota Sioux heritage; 
  • Gaylord Torrence, Fred and Virginia Merrill Senior Curator Emeritus of Native American Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; 
  • Giovanna Peebles, retired Vermont State Historic Preservation Officer and long-time State Archeologist. 

Native American Collections Stewardship Advisory Committee a series of cultural competency seminars supported by the National Endowment for the Arts that further engaged Native American partners and experts and focused on informing our long-term stewardship of Indigenous material. Committee members include: 

  • Joseph Bruchac, Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk – Abenaki Nation; Founder and Program Director, Ndakinna Education Center; 
  • Kelly McHugh, Collections Manager, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian;
  • Nancy Odegaard, PhD, Conservator, Arizona State Museum; Professor of Anthropology, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Arizona; 
  • Sylvanus Paul, Ramah Navajo; Collections Care, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian; 
  • Vera Longtoe Sheehan, Elnu Abenaki; Director, Vermont Abenaki Artists Association and Abenaki Arts & Education Center.
