LEAP! (Learn + Play) SUMMER CAMPS and WORKSHOPS 2016
Whether we’re cooking on the hearth, setting sail, or exploring the natural world, Shelburne Museum’s summer workshops offer children ages 4-13 the opportunity to engage their creativity and imaginations. Each and every day, we have the time for artistic expression, gallery explorations, play and investigation of the museum’s beautiful grounds. Our phenomenally fun, hands-on days emphasize the creative process and offer new perspectives on American artistic and historical traditions.

- A Week in 1795 Campers travel back in time to learn about everyday life in early Vermont. June 27 2016 - Jul 1, 2016158-10$3009 a.m.-3 p.m.
Can you imagine what a child’s life was like in early Vermont? Come and live it! Campers travel back in time to learn about everyday life in early Vermont. Our group will “live” at the Settlers’ House, cooking midday meals on the hearth, keeping a proper house, and tending gardens. We will visit museum galleries and historic buildings to investigate the art and artifacts of the United States’ early years.
Please note: Campers will eat food that they prepare and cook at the museum. We cook with various grains, eggs, and dairy. Please notify us if your child has allergies or sensitivities and help us arrange a safe way for your child to participate.
- NEW! Museum Explorers Preschoolers can be campers, too! July 5 2016 - Jul 8, 2016124-5$300 Full-Day, $150 Half-DayMorning Session: 8:30a.m.-11a.m. Afternoon Session: 12 p.m.-3 p.m.
Preschoolers can be campers, too! Our youngest campers will create art, play, explore games and toys, and spend time in Owl Cottage, our activity center designed just for kids! Join us for a fun-filled first camp experience designed to meet the needs of early learners through a nurturing, age-appropriate environment.
Come for a half-day or join us for both sessions. Lunch coverage will be provided for campers staying for a full day, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Children must be at least 4 years old and toilet trained to attend.
- Museum YOU Workshop Learn about the inner workings of Shelburne Museum! July 11 2016 - Jul 15, 20161211-13$3009 a.m.-3 p.m.
What’s it like to work at a museum? This week-long workshop allows participants the chance to go “behind the scenes”— to meet the people who design exhibits, preserve objects, manage collections and create programs – and learn about the inner workings of Shelburne Museum. Then, we’ll dive into the creation of our own temporary “exhibition” – creating objects, designing the exhibition, writing label text, and coordinating installation.
Please note: On Friday, July 15, family and friends are invited to an exclusive exhibition preview at 2:30 p.m.
- Creativity Lab, Maker Camp Join us for a week of making, creating, experimenting, and learning. July 18 2016 - Jul 22, 2016158-10$3259 a.m.-3 p.m.
Are you an inventor, creator, or curious about how things work? Join us for a week of making, creating, experimenting, and learning. Try your hands at construction, printing, electronics, robotics, DIY projects and so much more!
- Creativity Lab, Art Studio Let your creativity run wild! July 25 2016 - Jul 29, 2016156-8$3009 a.m.-3 p.m.
Let your creativity run wild! Will soaring birds, a gleaming steam engine, or a miniature circus parade inspire you? Do flowers, trees, and the natural world delight your artistic muse? Join us for a week of museum exploration and creativity. Campers indulge their own creative interests using a wide variety of art materials.
Please note: This camp includes a short open house for family and friends at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 29.
- AHOY! A Week at Sea Campers will “set sail” to navigate the farthest reaches and deepest fathoms of the Museum. August 1 2016 - Aug 5, 2016156-8$3009 a.m. - 3 p.m.
All hands on deck! Campers will “set sail” to navigate the farthest reaches and deepest fathoms of the museum. We’ll drop anchor at the Lighthouse and the Ticonderoga, explore nautical art and artifacts, and swap sailing lore as we earn our sea legs. Keep your eyes peeled and compasses at the ready on a search for maritime creatures, shipwrecks, and hidden treasure. We’ll have many artistic adventures before we find safe harbor at week’s end!
- History Comes Alive! Shelburne Museum and Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts join forces to host an exciting theater-based summer camp. August 8 2016 - Aug 12, 2016188-18$3009 a.m.-3 p.m.
Returning in 2016!
Shelburne Museum and Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, once again, join forces to host an exciting theater-based summer camp.
Travel back in time to the mid-1800s and imagine you’ve been enslaved, and are ready to risk your life for freedom. Or pretend you’re an abolitionist, willing to take a chance by standing up for what is right. Travel with us on the Underground Railroad in this week of improvisation in and around the buildings of Shelburne Museum. Don simple costume pieces as we create fictional characters to respond to the challenges of the time.
Family and friends are invited to see highlights from the week’s adventures on Friday, August 12. Time to be announced.
