Summer Camps

LEAP! (Learn + Play) SUMMER CAMPS and WORKSHOPS 2014

Whether we’re cooking on the hearth, setting sail, or exploring the natural world, Shelburne Museum’s summer workshops offer children ages 5-13 the opportunity to engage their creativity and imaginations. Each and every day, we have the time for artistic expression, gallery explorations, play and investigation of the Museum’s beautiful grounds. Our phenomenally fun, hands-on days emphasize the creative process and offer new perspectives on American artistic and historical traditions.

This camp includes a short Explorers awards ceremony for family and friends at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 3.

A Week in 1795 Campers travel back in time to learn about everyday life in early Vermont. July 7 2014 - Jul 11, 2014158-10$2809 a.m.-3 p.m.

Can you imagine what a child’s life was like in early Vermont? Come and live it! Campers travel back in time to learn about everyday life in early Vermont. Our group will “live” at the Settlers’ House, cooking midday meals on the hearth, keeping a proper house, and tending gardens. We will visit Museum galleries and historic buildings to investigate the art and artifacts of the United States’ early years.

Campers will eat food that they prepare and cook at the Museum. We cook with various grains, eggs, and dairy. Please notify us if your child has allergies or sensitivities and help us arrange a safe way for your child to participate.

Museum YOU Workshop Learn about the inner workings of Shelburne Museum! July 14 2014 - Jul 18, 20141211-13$2959 a.m.-3 p.m.

What’s it like to work at a museum? This weeklong workshop allows participants the chance to go “behind the scenes” – to meet the people who design exhibits, preserve objects, manage collections and create programs – and learn about the inner workings of Shelburne Museum. Then, we’ll dive into the creation of our own temporary “exhibition” – selecting objects, designing the exhibition, writing label text and coordinating installation.

On Friday, July 18, family and friends are invited to an exclusive exhibition preview at 2:30 p.m.

Creativity Lab, Session 1 Let your creativity run wild! July 21 2014 - Jul 25, 2014158-10$2809 a.m.-3 p.m.

Let your creativity run wild! Will soaring birds, a gleaming steam engine, or a miniature circus parade inspire you? Do flowers, trees, and the natural world nurture your artistic muse? Join us for a week of Museum exploration and creativity. Campers indulge their own creative interests using a wide variety of art materials. On Friday we’ll host a campers’ art exhibit for family and friends.

These camps include a short open house for family and friends at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 25 and Friday, August 1.

AHOY! A Week at Sea Sold Out Campers will “set sail” to navigate the farthest reaches and deepest fathoms of the Museum. August 4 2014 - Aug 8, 2014156-8$2809 a.m. - 3 p.m.

All hands on deck! Campers will “set sail” to navigate the farthest reaches and deepest fathoms of the Museum. We’ll drop anchor at the Lighthouse and the Ticonderoga, explore nautical art and artifacts and swap sailing lore as we earn our sea legs. Keep your eyes peeled and compasses at the ready on a search for maritime creatures, shipwrecks, and hidden treasure. We’ll have many artistic adventures before we find safe harbor at week’s end!

History Comes Alive! Back by Popular Demand! August 11 2014 - Aug 15, 2014188-13$3009 a.m.-3 p.m.

Shelburne Museum and Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, once again, join forces to host an exciting theater-based summer camp.

Imagine you’re sweating in the boiler room of the steamboat Ticonderoga in 1927, while transporting your town’s first fancy automobile! Imagine you’re listening to a newfangled radio when news of the terrible 1927 flood is announced. Bring back the Roaring Twenties (1920s) Vermont-style in this week of improvisation in and around the buildings and grounds of the Shelburne Museum. Don simple costume pieces as we create fictional characters to respond to the challenges of the time. It’ll be the “bee’s knees!”

Family and friends are invited to see highlights from the week’s adventures on Friday, August 15.
