Vermont’s landscape has been shaped and defined by its many miles of stonewalls. Born out of necessity these functional and artistic creations provide evidence of both practicality and craftsmanship.
This season’s installation in the lower level of Shaker Shed explores the history, variety and materiality of Vermont stonewalls.
Whether dumped, thrown, laid or embellished; made of fieldstone, redstone, Panton stone or granite; the stone structures created by both farmers and stonemasons have stood the test of time.
