DESCRIPTION:Shales’ new book\, “Pitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach” (Bloomsbury 2026)\, discusses vessels preserved from ancient Indigenous American cultures\, those caught in the spiderwebs of antique shops\, and common tools used for drinks lurking in modern kitchens. Might a history of art extracted from the cupboard liberate us from usual cultural hierarchies of the Grand Tour—and make the idea of art more accessible and relevant? The presentation will include ‘show-and-touch’ engagement with a selection from mass-produced goods. How does a design once on display at the London Crystal Palace in 1851 compare to one from our Plasticene era? \nEzra Shales\, Ph.D.\, teaches in the art history department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and is the author of “The Shape of Craft” (2017) and “Made in Newark: Cultivating Industrial Arts and Civic Identity in the Progressive Era” (2010). He has contributed to museum exhibition catalogs for artists such as Polly Apfelbaum and Edith Heath\, and published in the “Journal of Modern Craft” and the “Journal of Design History.” His doctoral dissertation focused on the Progressive Era provocations of Vermont-born librarian and museum founder John Cotton Dana\, whose commitment to quotidian beauties he still finds both inspiring and rewarding. \nLecture followed by audience Q&A. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Shelburne Museum’s quilt collection\, participants will explore the visual language of quilts through grid\, repeated shapes\, color\, pattern\, symmetry\, and composition. \nAssociate Conservator Awyn Rileybird will begin with a brief introduction to log cabin quilts and share detailed images of examples currently on display in The Dana-Spencer Textile Galleries at Hat and Fragrance. Awyn will then guide participants in cutting\, arranging\, and layering decorative fine art papers to create their own log cabin quilt-inspired square. \nThis hands-on workshop draws on traditional quilt design but requires no sewing or previous art experience. DESCRIPTION:Visitors follow a lead car in their own vehicles on a single loop through the miraculous light displays.\n  \nEntry times: 4:30-7:30 p.m. on the half-hour. Each Drive-around loop lasts approximately 15 minutes.\n \nFor safety reasons\, visitors must remain in their vehicles for the duration of the drive-around. The caravan will stop at key locations so that visitors can roll down their windows to enjoy the music and take pictures from the safety and comfort of their vehicles.\n \nUpon arrival\, please present your vehicle’s ticket to a staff member stationed in the circle in front of the Museum Store/Admissions building.\n \n \n
