Assistant/Associate Director of Development

Position Type: Year-round, Full-time, Staff Position

Salary: $60,000-$75,000/Year

Duties & Responsibilities:

Shelburne Museum seeks an Assistant/Associate Director of Development to grow and sustain a robust fundraising operation for the largest art and history museum in northern New EnglandThe Assistant/Associate Director of Development will provide direct support to the Director of Development in achieving fundraising and development goals across the institution. This includes planning and executing Annual Fund campaigns, cultivating a portfolio of major gift prospects, providing support for other fundraising campaigns including a capital campaign and planned giving program, and overseeing membership and fundraising events programs.

A successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be familiar with database management and digital outreach platforms to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Effective engagement of existing and prospective donors in a number of channels including email, print and social media;
  • Assist in the planning and execution of annual fundraising that meets or exceeds goals;
  • Assist with foundation and corporate support;
  • Support success of capital campaign with prospect management, event management and donor stewardship;
  • Support fundraising events and programs;
  • Demonstrate high level of attention to detail in all aspects of the job including database management and reporting;
  • Assist in creation of collateral materials, proposals, and reports.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, with a minimum of five years of demonstrated success;
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities ranging from creating and executing plans and achieving goals, to a commitment to excellence in all development activities;
  • Substantial experience implementing fundraising plans and cultivating relationships for all funding streams with a proven track record of achieving income targets;

Associate Conservator

Position Type: Year-round, Full-time,  3 ½ year Term position with the potential of renewal

Department: Collections

Reports to: Director of Collections & Conservation

Pay range: $72,000/year

Anticipated start date: September, 2024 or later

The Associate Conservator is a member of the Collections department, a dynamic team who stewards Shelburne Museum’s world-renowned permanent collections of art and Americana, manages an active calendar of exhibitions, and collaborates with institutions around the world on incoming and outgoing loans. The department includes a Director of Collections and Conservation (a conservator), Registrar, Associate Registrar, Associate Registrar/Archivist/Digital Asset Manager, Collections Manager, Preparator, and two Art Handlers. The Museum’s collections are housed in thirty-nine buildings spread out over forty-five beautifully landscaped acres. Among these are twenty-five significant examples of historic New England architecture, relocated to the Museum grounds to provide a historic setting for the works of art and artifacts housed within. Essential Job Functions: 

  • Document, stabilize, and restore works of art and artifacts in the Museum’s diverse collection in accordance with the American Institute for Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
  • Collaborate with the Preparator, Art Handlers, Collections Manager, and Registrars on matters related to mount making, storage, and movement
  • Collaborate with the Director of Collections & Conservation and Collections Manager to monitor environmental conditions in buildings and perform integrated pest management activities
  • Perform practical research to inform conservation treatment decisions
  • Assist with developing departmental and exhibition budget estimates
  • Maintain and organize conservation documentation files in accordance with established Museum procedures
  • Participate in departmental Collections Risk Management and Disaster Recovery trainings
  • Present work and research to general public, conservators, and allied professionals in tours, presentations, and publications.
  • Assist with supervision of department volunteers and interns
  • Occasional travel, weekend and evening hours

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree graduate of a recognized conservation training program
  • 3-5 years of skilled conservation experience. Experience in a museum setting preferred. 

Qualifications:

  • Specialization in objects and/or textiles conservation and strong interest in preventive conservation preferred
  • Demonstrated familiarity of the American Institute for Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
  • Knowledge of conservation photodocumentation practices
  • Patience and fastidious eye for detail
  • Knowledge of chemistry as it relates to conservation practice, polarized light microscopy, pXRF
  • Knowledge of safety standards within a lab setting
  • Computer literate with knowledge of collections management databases, Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe image editing software
  • Able to handle large and heavy objects as well as small and fragile objects
  • Able to work indoors in the conservation lab, on-site in exhibition buildings, and outdoors
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Position Type: Part Time, Seasonal, Hourly

Department: Museum Store

Reports To: Visitor Services & Museum Store Manager

Pay Range: $15/hr

Museum Store Sales associates are expected to be helpful and knowledgeable about the store merchandise as well as the Museum including the Museum’s collection, special events and exhibits.

  • Support the store, visitor services, admissions, and operation of the carousel
  • Greet and assist customers in a friendly manner
  • Operate computerized cash registers
  • Restock and clean the store daily
  • Operate the Museum’s carousel while upholding strict safety regulations

Experience and Skills:

Positive and friendly attitude, previous experience working with public necessary and experience with computerized registers along with cash handling preferred. Must be able to vacuum and do light maintenance.

Working Conditions:

Applicants must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.

Schedule Requirements:

The season is April – October 2024, with the possibility to extend through January 1st, 2025. Must be available at least two days a week and have a flexible schedule. Weekends and holidays a must. Hours may vary due to visitor attendance.

Department: Landscape and Grounds

Hours: 32-40 Hours/Week 

Salary Range: $18.00/hour

Seasonal Gardener is responsible for a wide range of gardens both on the Museum’s campus and the Brick House property in Shelburne, VT. Ultimately, ensuring the gardens and green spaces are healthy and beautiful.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Watering and feeding plants
  • Mulch, edge, and weed garden spaces
  • Prune and trim shrubs and bushes
  • Monitor overall health of the plants
  • Installation and maintenance of new plants
  • Assist with Spring and Fall cleanups on the grounds
  • Keeps gardens and green spaces clear of debris and litter
  • Assist with other landscaping duties as needed and work with garden volunteers

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, 1 year of similar, satisfactory work experience is a plus
  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Valid drivers license and clean driving record
  • Positive attitude, flexible, collaborative, attends to detail and shows initiative;

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and push tools and equipment weighing 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in a variety of outside conditions and do rigorous labor for extended periods of time
  • May need to interact with museum visitors

Reports to: Landscape and Ground Manager  

Salary Range: $17.00-$20.00 per hour, DOE

The Groundskeeper is responsible for general maintenance of Shelburne Museum’s landscapes on the main campus, founders’ estate the Brick House, Cole house, Norton and Employees offices. The ideal candidate has the desire to work in a collaborative environment, is professional and courteous to others. Has good communication skills and has a positive attitude. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain a variety of landscape equipment. Including string trimmers, push mowers, backpack blowers, zero turn mowers, skid steer, golf carts and vehicles.  
  • Regular maintenance of gravel roads and walking paths, fence repairs, pruning of trees and bushes. 
  • Other Duties include Spring and Fall cleanup, mulching gardens, and occasional maintenance of gardens as needed. 
  • During winter months plowing, shoveling and overall upkeep of museum. There will be some on-call situations and possibly overtime.  
  • Assist Landscape and Gardens manager as needed.  

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with 1-3 years of landscaping experience;
  • Valid drivers license, clean driving record, reliable transportation;
  • Positive proactive attitude, flexible, collaborative, attends to detail and shows initiative;
  • Knowledge of plants such as trees and perennials;
  • Organizational skills with experience with Microsoft office;

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and push tools and equipment weighing 50 pounds;
  • Ability to work in a variety of outside conditions and do rigorous labor for extended periods of time;
  • Position requires working in the sun, wind, rain, and snow with temperature fluctuations throughout the year;
  • May need to interact with museum visitors;
  • Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm;

Reports to: Museum Services Manager

Salary range: $15.75 – $18.00 DOE

The Museum Services group is responsible for the upkeep and presentation of the Museum’s public spaces and offices. This is an active, dynamic position that interacts with all departments and positively impacts the visitor experience at the Museum. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Janitorial Services within public spaces of buildings and restrooms
  • Set-up and break-down of spaces being used for special events and/or facility rentals
  • Assisting the Preservation and Landscape Department with special projects throughout the Museum

Experience and Skills:

Candidates must be 18 years or older and able to drive a golf cart. A Vermont driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions:

The ability to lift and carry 40 pounds and must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. Experience in similar capacity preferred, but willing to train candidates who show genuine interest in maintaining historic structures and caring for the Museum during our busy season.

Reports to: Manager of Guides, Group Tours, and Volunteers

Visitor Guides represent Shelburne Museum as staff ambassadors. They belong to a large community of fellow learners dedicated to sharing their enthusiasm and appreciation for art, history, and culture with more than 100,000 visitors annually.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated interest in history, art, and culture.
  • Equivalent of two or more years of college preferred but not required.
  • At least two years of experience working with the public is highly desirable.
  • Experience with customer service, prior work as an educator, and/or prior experience in a museum or related organization will be considered assets.
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with supervisors, fellow guides, and with staff from across the museum.
  • Enthusiasm to learn about the museum’s diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) initiatives through periodic paid training and workshops; a desire to make the museum more welcoming and inclusive for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Some visitor service functions require work in multi-level historical structures and travel throughout the campus. 

 

Schedule Requirements

  • The 2024 season is May 11 – October 20.
  • Must be available at least three days a week. A flexible schedule is highly desirable.
  • Visitor Guides should expect to work at least one weekend day and some holidays.
  • New Visitor Guides will be expected to attend 3 days of paid training in early May and periodic paid training held during the public season.
