Tools
The Museum’s extensive 19th-century tools include examples used by blacksmiths, harness-makers, cobblers, coopers (barrel makers), carpenters, joiners, and cabinetmakers. A typical 19th century joiner or cabinetmaker’s tool-chest contained 20 to 50 different planes, each with a specialized function, and hundreds of planes are on display in Shaker Shed.
Also exhibited are 19th- and early 20th-century printing presses and barn-frame looms. Daily demonstrations of blacksmithing, loom weaving (including a rare operating Jacquard loom), and letterpress printing bring to life these essential New England trades.
