Shelburne Museum to Exhibit Historic Wampum Belts
June 30, 2009

Shelburne Museum will exhibit rare 17th century beaded wampum belts from the Abenaki and Huron peoples in a special exhibition celebrating the quadricentennial anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s arrival at Lake Champlain.

Wampum Belts from Chartres Cathedral Treasury showcases two rare masterpieces of Native American art on loan from the Bishop of Chartres and the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Chartres and on view in the United States for the first time. The belts will be on exhibit from July 2 through July 31.

SHELBURNE MUSEUM ANNOUNCES JAMES PIZZAGALLI ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Shelburne Museum Director Stephan Jost announced the election of James Pizzagalli as chairman of the board of trustees at Shelburne Museum.

Pizzagalli, of Shelburne, has served as a museum trustee for over 20 years. He succeeds Charles L. Granquist whose term as chairman expired, but who will remain on the board.

Purple blooms always steal the show at Lilac and Gardening Sunday at Shelburne Museum, but this year the celebration has a decidedly green theme, too. The annual lilac festival features talks by local environmental writers sharing their recent works on local foods, organic gardening and ecology.

A dazzling 56-carat necklace designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany is part of a new exhibit at Shelburne Museum that celebrates the American designer’s deep bond with nature.

The exhibit, entitled Louis Comfort Tiffany: Nature by Design, opens on June 20 and runs through October 25.

Full Throttle Exhibit Features Top Bike Builders

Whether it’s the thundering rumble of a Harley, the radical rake of a custom chopper or the retro appeal of an Indian, motorcycles have consistently captured the American imagination.

Shelburne Museum examines the art of the bike in a new exhibit entitled Full Throttle: Vintage Motorcycles, Custom Choppers and Racing Machines on exhibit from May 17 through October 25.

Featured builders include some of the best in the world including legendary master builders Dave Perewitz and Arlen Ness along side the hottest builders in the world today including Matt Hotch, Roger Goldammer and Roland Sands. The exhibit also includes emerging talent, including Lock Baker, destined to be the celebrity builders of tomorrow.
